Ultrasound Therapy & Electrical Muscle Stimulation
Therapeutic Ultrasound:
Ultrasound is a therapeutic treatment using high-frequency sound waves administered in the region of soft tissue injuries. Sound vibrations, as fast as a million times per second, penetrate the tissues deep in the body, creating a heat response.
Purpose of therapeutic ultrasound is:
It promotes faster healing.
Early on in treatment, its sonic waves and vibrations help to push out inflammation, edema (the after-fluid of inflammation) from the damaged tissue.
Later on in treatment, the sonic waves and vibrations help to break up adhesions and scar tissue to improve mobility.
Electrical Muscle Stimulation:
Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) is a therapeutic treatment that transmits electrical impulses into muscle tissue.
Purpose of electric muscle stimulation is:
Early on in the treatment plan, EMS stimulates the body to release its own natural pain killers (AKA, endorphins).
Later on in the treatment plan, EMS stimulates the muscle tissue and helps to re-educate the damaged muscle on how to contract properly.
